We are delighted to invite horn players to a two-day intensive Horn Masterclass with Christian Binde, offering a unique opportunity to work closely with an internationally experienced horn player, soloist, chamber musician, teacher, and specialist in historically informed performance.

The masterclass is designed for musicians who want to deepen their technical skills, strengthen their musical expression, develop their performance confidence, and gain new perspectives on the horn and its repertoire.

Across two intensive days, participants will work both individually and in ensemble, combining personalised tuition with practical group sessions, a lecture on the history of the horn, and a dedicated session exploring stage fright and performance anxiety.

The programme is conceived as a complete musical experience — focusing not only on technical development, but also on musical communication, listening, historical awareness, ensemble skills, and confident performance.

TWO INDIVIDUAL LESSONS WITH CHRISTIAN BINDE

Each participant will receive two individual lessons with Christian Binde, allowing for focused and personalised work on their playing.

Depending on the individual needs and goals of each participant, lessons may address sound production, breathing, articulation, flexibility, intonation, phrasing, technical development, repertoire, and performance preparation.

Christian’s broad experience as a performer on both historical and modern instruments provides participants with the opportunity to explore different approaches to sound, style, articulation, and musical interpretation.

Participants will receive individual feedback and practical ideas that they can take into their continued musical development.

THE HISTORY OF THE HORN

A special lecture with Christian Binde will explore the history and development of the horn, from its origins and early forms through to the modern instrument.

The session will examine how changes in the construction of the instrument influenced its sound, technique, repertoire, and role within the orchestra. Particular attention will be given to the development of historical horn playing and the relationship between the instrument, musical style, and performance practice.

This lecture offers participants an opportunity to understand the horn not simply as an instrument, but as a part of a constantly evolving musical tradition.

STAGE FRIGHT & PERFORMANCE CONFIDENCE

Technical preparation is only one part of being a successful performer. Even experienced musicians can struggle with nerves, pressure, and performance anxiety.

This special session will focus on stage fright and performance confidence, exploring practical ways to approach the psychological and physical challenges of performing.

Participants will discuss and work on areas such as concentration, breathing, mental preparation, dealing with mistakes, managing expectations, and remaining focused and present while performing.

The aim is not necessarily to eliminate nervousness, but to understand it and develop strategies that allow it to become a source of energy rather than an obstacle.

ENSEMBLE PLAYING

The masterclass will include dedicated ensemble sessions, giving participants the opportunity to develop their skills as chamber and orchestral musicians.

Ensemble playing is at the heart of the horn player’s musical life. It requires not only technical security, but also the ability to listen, react, communicate, and contribute to a larger musical idea.

CHRISTIAN BINDE

Christian Binde was born in Duisburg, Germany. Following his musical studies in Essen and Cologne, he initially performed with traditional orchestras before deciding to specialise in historical instruments and historically informed performance practice.

A major turning point in his musical career came with the 1997 recording of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos with La Stravaganza Hamburg, now known as Nova Stravaganza.

For the following ten years, Christian Binde lived in Vienna, working internationally as an orchestral musician, soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. His musical activities have taken him throughout Europe as well as to Japan, the United States, and South America.

Since returning to Germany in 2007, he has collaborated with many renowned ensembles and orchestras specialising in historically informed performance, including the Freiburger Barockorchester, Concerto Köln, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Les Musiciens du Louvre, MusicAeterna, Il Pomo d’Oro, and Les Musiciens du Prince.

At the same time, he has performed with ensembles and orchestras using modern instruments, including the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Wiener Kammerphilharmonie, Musica Aeterna, and the Styriarte Festival Orchestra.

His extensive discography, including numerous CD productions, reflects the breadth of his musical experience and artistic work.

Christian Binde is also an experienced educator and regularly shares his knowledge through teaching, workshops, masterclasses, and summer academies. He has taught and lectured at institutions including the Private University Anton Bruckner in Linz and the Musikhochschule Trossingen.

In 2010, he founded his own ensemble, Compagnia di Punto, which has developed a distinctive profile in historically informed performance. The ensemble’s fourth recording was released in 2020 in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk on the Sony/DHM label.

In May 2026, Christian Binde made his debut as a conductor at the Brühler Schlosskonzerte in Germany, adding a new dimension to his already diverse musical career.

His experience across historical and modern performance practice, solo performance, chamber music, orchestral playing, teaching, and conducting makes him a particularly inspiring mentor for horn players seeking to broaden both their technical abilities and their musical perspective.

The masterclass offers participants the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in their instrument and in the musical process.

FEES AND REGISTRATION

The fee for active participation in the masterclass is €175, payable by bank transfer. It includes all lessons, sessions, and activities included in the programme.

PASSIVE PARTICIPANTS

Listeners and guests can purchase a €10 ticket for passive participation in the two-day masterclass.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Those who wish to participate but are experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to contact us and describe their situation. In a limited number of cases, full or partial scholarships may be available.

PAYMENT METHOD

Following acceptance, applicants will receive payment instructions for the masterclass fee. A place in the masterclass is considered confirmed only once the corresponding payment has been received.
