Varna: Cineconcert ‘Dimitar Nenov and the Dimensions of Elegance’

26 March 2024 | 7 p.m. | Varna
Radio Varna - Concert Studio | 22, Primorski Blvd

The musical documentary dedicated to the Bulgarian intellectual Dimitar Nenov (1901-1953) was made on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of his birth. It tells the story of a bright performer, a talented composer, a practicing architect and an important figure in Bulgarian public life from the first half of the 20th century. The film “Dimitar Nenov and the Dimensions of Elegance” was produced by the pianist Veneta Neynska and the video producer Jassen Haralampiev, after the idea of the art historian Elisaveta Stancheva with the support of the National Culture Fund. It also includes the only surviving recorded performance by Dimitar Nenov, kept in the archives of the Bulgarian National Radio.

A major part of the artistic qualities of the project are the specially made new video recordings of Nenov’s iconic piano works by the pianist Veneta Neynska. The music recordings were made by sound director Pavel Stefanov in the Concert Hall of the National Music Academy in Sofia. Among them are six of his short pieces, as well as his most impressive work – the Toccata for solo piano. The film uses rare and previously unseen photos of Nenov from his personal archive, stored in the Scientific Archive of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
